Receipt notices arrive. Then the waiting starts.
One notice per form
A single family case can produce several I-797C notices: one each for the I-130, I-485, I-765 and I-131.
Notices are slow
Paper notices arrive days or weeks after USCIS acts. The online status usually updates first.
Numbers get lost
Receipt numbers live in scanned PDFs, inboxes and spreadsheets, which makes checking them all a chore.

Understanding Form I-797
What is Form I-797?
Form I-797 is USCIS's Notice of Action, the official letter it sends when it takes an action on a case. There are several versions. The I-797C is the one most people see first: it confirms that USCIS received a filing and gives it a receipt number. The same form is also used for things like biometrics appointments, interview notices and transfers.
Other versions, such as the I-797 approval notice and the I-797A, are sent when a petition or application is approved. The I-797A often comes with a replacement I-94 for people already in the United States.
Where to find the receipt number
The receipt number is printed near the top left of the notice, labeled "Receipt Number". It is three letters followed by ten digits, for example IOE0912345678 or EAC2490118822. The letters identify the USCIS office or system that received the filing. Online filings commonly start with IOE.
Why the online status matters
The paper notice is the official record, but it arrives by mail. The online case status usually changes first, which is why firms track receipt numbers instead of waiting for envelopes. Tracking every receipt by hand stops being practical once you have more than a few dozen.
